Jacob 4065, A.K.A. Jake is a 2 year old, 70 lb. male (although he needs to gain a few pounds at the moment) owner surrender who was rescued from a shelter in rural North Carolina. The back story we received was that he was a farm dog who was kept outside in a dog pen for the first two years of his life. When he eventually figured out how to get out of his pen he discovered the tremendous fun of chasing chickens and unfortunately he apparently killed a few which landed him in the pound. During his initial evaluation he was introduced to 3 dogs, 2 of the dogs were calm and the greeting went well but one of the dogs greeted him with aggression and Jacob reacted with aggression and was marked as being “dog aggressive”.

All that being said, I will mention at this time that Jacob is an intact 2 year old male, however, he does have an appointment on 07/14/2014 to be neutered. Considering the fact that he spent his entire life in a pen, alone and unsocialized, I personally think he did pretty well. When he came to me as a foster, I introduced him to my more dominant neutered male GSD first. I could tell Jacob was nervous and he did bark when Rocco approached him but it took only a matter of minutes before he started to relax and show interest in giving the introduction another chance and this time it was much better. The introduction to my second neutered GSD male went much more smoothly. As with the introduction of a new dog to any pack, the first few days are a “getting to know you” and trust building period. There were arguments but none of them initiated by Jacob. I have taken him for long pack walks in my neighborhood where we have been approached by loose dogs and Jacob showed no signs of aggression. My true feeling about Jacob is that he is a “Don’t start none, won’t be none” kind of GSD and to me that is perfectly normal.

Now, because Jacob spent so much of his life outside, he had to learn how to be an “inside dog”. It took one time of me yelling “NO!” when he wet on the floor and he has never had another accident since! He is toy, treat and praise motivated and eager to please so he is learning the basics VERY QUICKLY! He will sit on command now and is working on down, leave it and paw. He will even poke the door with his nose to leave a room or gently scratch to come in. He does not enjoy being crated and will yelp but does not become hysterical or destructive.  He has earned our trust enough to be left loose in the house with our other 2 boys at night and when we leave, and has been great, no accidents or destructive behavior although he may not be able to resist food left out in an easily accessible place. He is affectionate and playful and good with kids (age range he has been exposed to at my house 18 months, 4, 8, 10 and 14 years old). I recommend Jacob go to a family with GSD experience, plenty of patience and time to teach him and keep him socialized. He is a really good boy and will make an excellent family pet to the right family.
