Little Zenzi came from high kill NC shelter where she was surrendered in horrible condition with her eight puppies. The puppies have survived, but at the expense of mom's health. This poor girl has been producing a small amount of milk. Her Body Condition Index is 1 - 1.5 out of 10. The vet has examined her and the pups. Zenzi cannot have any vaccinations yet. No blood was able to be drawn from any of her extremities or her carotid arteries (either side) because her blood pressure is so low. Needless to say, Zenzi gets to eat as much wonderful prime puppy food as she can eat to hopefully bring her around. She has gained five pounds the first week. The puppies have started gaining weight at a normal rate and Zenzi has enough milk to go around now. Little teeth have sprouted and Zenzi may not want to nurse much longer, but the babies are eating canned puppy food too.

This little dog is the most grateful creature I have ever seen. Grateful for the food and shelter, but especially grateful for the attention. She love to be petted. It's hard to run your hands over those sharp little bones, but the look on her face is pure joy at each touch. She likes to be with the humans, but gets along pretty well with the big dogs. She can run under the bellies of the large GSDs and has them terrified of her. She has never done anything to them, but she can click those teeth and make a really ugly face if they look at her puppies wrong. She has gotten the pack trained to babysit for her when the puppies are outdoors and she looks for a lap to sit in or near.

She is housebroken, though there were a couple accidents early on when her tummy was in an uproar from being full of parasites and having some new food. Zenzi is crate trained, although there is no need for a crate. I leave her loose in the house with the other dogs when I am gone. She has loved everyone she has met so far. She will be attending an Adoption Day event and I will have more information on how she is with different ages of people. This girl may be small, but she is protective of the house and yard already. Zenzi is such a charming little girl who, with the help of VGSR will have a chance to make some family very happy! More info to come...

Update 10/24/13...Zenzi is up to 39 pounds and was strong enough to have a blood sample taken by the vet. She is negative for Heartworms, which was a great concern. She is out of the critical status and is looking very good and is looking for a wonderful home.
