Jolene was at RCACP (Roanoke, VA Animal Control) and was out of time. She was heart worm positive and very timid, mostly black and nobody wanted her. I got her out through Nosy Dogs and because of her medical condition, Angels of Assisi agreed to pay for her treatment. I have had her for about six months. She has had her heartworm treatment and is on Heartguard plus. The hair on her back is very slowly growing back. She is intact and will need to be spayed. That will be done soon since she had to wait for her heart worm treatment to be completed first. She was in heat in December.
Jolene is a bi-color female weighing about 75 pounds. Her ear tips are rounded off from fly strike and she has some scars on her face. She has been abused in her past and still cowers on the ground sometimes when she senses she has done something wrong. She is easy to correct by voice alone. She comes and sits on command. She is loyal and adoring and sleeps on the floor beside the bed. Jolene notifies the family of any sounds or phone notifications by thumping her tail or getting up and giving kisses. She has actually wagged the fur off the sides of her tail rubbing it on the floor. She was very mildly aggressive with the other female dogs when she first came to me, but got past that and now gets along wonderfully with all the dogs. She has been around a cat and showed interest, but did not pursue the cat. I don’t trust her with cats that would run. Jolene is shy but friendly with strangers, protective of her home inside and in the yard and likes children and small dogs that act right.
She is a joy to be around and will follow you anywhere for a belly rub. Jolene is completely housebroken. She has only had one accident and that was when there was a bug going through the pack and she could not get outside in time. The only thing not safe in the house are cardboard boxes and she has been known to chew them up. She does not do that so much recently, since she has been getting regular meals. She was underweight and very hungry when she first came and ate a lot of cardboard then. She walks well on a leash and sits and knows "gentle". Jolene can fit into a pack but may try to be dominant at first. She is easily corrected and will soon find her place with other dogs. She loves to play and run with my other dogs and is very interested in squirrels. Obsessed might be the correct word. Jolene loves to hear her name, especially if you talk baby talk to her. She is an exceptionally sweet dog who adores her people and loves to help with any chore as GSDs love to do. She gives a lot more than she gets.
