Chico is a young, male, mixed–breed, who was turned into a shelter because his owner no longer wanted to care for his skin issues. He is a tall, lanky boy with huge paws and is merely a big puppy right now. He is underweight and needs to put on about 10-15 pounds. When I met him, my first thought was that he could star in a Disney movie. He looks like one of those sweet, scruffy dogs they are so famous for featuring. He is a very friendly boy and just wants to be loved on. Chico is getting over his very scary experience in the shelter. He was so frightened there he just shook, but he was happy to give kisses to anyone who would pet him or spend time with him.
Chico is still timid but is willing to learn and has come a long way in a short time. At first, he was not enthusiastic about taking walks in a strange, new place, but now he looks forward to this routine and is curious about the dogs we meet. He is very gentle with the small ones and wants to play with the bigger ones. Chico walks well on a leash as long as he is not pushed with things he is afraid of right now. Then, he just wants to go home.
We believe his skin problems are due to allergies. As a result, he has many bald patches and areas of toughened skin. According to his history, he has had this problem for the past 4 months. There is also a possibility that he was exposed to or laying on something that irritated his skin. (A cedar–filled bed, maybe.) His coat is fine and very soft on his back and tail, just the under–belly, face and legs seem to be affected. From scratching, he has developed a secondary yeast infection which is responding nicely to medication. He feels so much better and even endured a nice oatmeal bath to soothe his skin. The condition of his fur is improving already.
Chico loves his crate and the security it provides. He lets me know when he needs to go outside for potty breaks and has never had an accident in my home! YEA, what a good boy.
He will not be available for adoption, until we can get his skin problem cured. He will make a wonderful friend and companion for someone who just needs an easy dog to love on and pal around with!
