About Mulan

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Ear Type: Natural/Uncropped
Mulan is 4-year-old female, black-and-tan German Shepherd with impeccable house manners and who loves to give kisses. She was surrendered to a shelter by a family who said they didnt have time for her anymore. Mulan obviously had a lot of attention paid to her before they ran out of time she is completely house-trained (not one accident!), sits on command, takes treats gently from hands, behaves well during her much-loved car rides, hasnt chewed anything thats not hers, and nearly fell asleep during a post-bath brush and blow-dry. Mulan is currently living with a cat and is doing great learning not to chase. Frequently she will ignore the cat, but when she does express some interest, she responds immediately and contritely to a reminder to Leave It. Mulan would make a good jogging partner. She doesnt have a strong prey drive while on walks. Speaking of walks, that is one area where she needs a strong leader, because she doesnt want to be the alpha dog! Ninety-five percent of the time Mulan is terrific on the leash. However, because she wants and needs reassurance that her human is in charge, she will sometimes put on a big-scary-dog front. Its an act to hide her lack of confidence. She tries to run away from any dog that doesnt back down, including one Yorkshire terrier. Foster mom and dad are getting her out on walks every day, including daily walks to hang out outside Starbucks, and to a lake, paths, etc., where there are people and dogs, and she is doing better all the time. Mulan immediately warms up to people who are not afraid of her or who have been properly introduced, accepting scratches and giving kisses in less than a minute. She may not be good with small children, not because she might hurt them, but because she may be afraid of their unpredictable exuberance. Mulan is looking for a family as sweet, loving, and loyal as she is, who will welcome her into their pack forever. She is being fostered in Northern VA. Although donations of all types are needed, our primary need is foster homes for our lovely dogs while they wait for their new family to find them. Fostering is an extremely rewarding experience. Vet care is paid for by our rescue, and we can even provide you with food. All YOU need to add is love and security.

The adoption process starts with the applicant filling out the adoption application. This can happen at any time during the process, before or after having met a GSD that might be the ideal companion. (It's an advantage to have a pre-approved application on file with VGSR. It should be stressed here that being pre-approved does not mean that any potential adopter can select any available dog at will and take that dog home immediately. VGSR will exercise its best judgement as to which GSD will be the best match for that specific adopter based on a number of qualifying criteria. Many GSDs that come to us are matched up with their new people very quickly because their people have been pre-approved.) The applicant then submits the application form with a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee. VGSR reviews the application, then schedules an interview and home visit during which a number of questions are asked and the home is reviewed to be sure there is a contained/safe yard, and to meet the family involved. Once the application is approved, the applicant is asked to submit a $200.00 donation to VGSR, and the adoption is completed.
