7/12/2021 UPDATE on DIXIE 4693

We have had Dixie for about a month now and are continually working on socializing her. Dixie is just as sweet and loving as you could ever want if she trusts you, but as of now it is very hard for Dixie to trust anyone 100%. As much as she seems to love and trust her foster mom, when her foster mom does something a little bit different or out of the ordinary, Dixie is leery and distrusting of even her for a short period of time. Because Dixie is so distrusting and frightened of anything new and different we have to move at a slower pace as to not undo the progress we have already made.

Family members and friends have come over on various occasions to meet Dixie and her reaction is to bark and retreat to what she feels is a safe place. She is not the least bit aggressive just frightened of new people. After a while she will settle down next to her foster mom but keeps a keen eye on our visitors and will quickly return to barking and retreating when they move around. She is not the least bit interested in trying to get to know them even when they are offering her treats. As of now Dixie is still working on warming up fully to her foster dad.

Dixie loves to ride in the car and will quickly jump into the back seat although she does not want to get out if we are in an area unfamiliar to her. She is doing much better with not pulling on the leash and following the heel command as long as she is in familiar territory. Dixie still needs a lot of work to help her overcome her fears of the outside world and help her gain confidence. Dixie will definitely need an adopter with strong GSD experience. Someone who is strong, patient and willing to work with her to help her be the very best GSD she can be; once Dixie has overcome her fears and is trusting she will be the most phenomenal companion anyone could ever want.

I am certainly not an expert on this, this is only my opinion. Because Dixie is extremely smart and intuitive and seems to be able to see a situation almost before it happens along with the strong bond she forms with her special person, I truly feel Dixie could be a fantastic service dog.

Dixie does not have a problem with submissive/exciting urination as was believed earlier, but she does have a weak bladder and is on Proin 50 mg tablets daily. When we first got Dixie she had come in contact with something she was allergic to. The vet put her on an anti-itch med for 30 days and we put her on 4-Health Sensitive Skin canned dog food and Hills Sensitive Stomach/Skin nonprescription dry dog food and she is doing great on that.

6/7/2021. This beautiful young lady is Dixie 4693. We have only had Dixie for a few days and still have a lot to learn about her. We will give an update later.

In just a few short months Dixie lost those closest and most precious to her. First her four legged companion and then her human. It appears that Dixie has not been socialized to any great degree and is pretty much afraid of things new and different. Dixie is slow to warm up at this point and seems to have been a one person dog. She has a desire to please and loves to be loved. She has taken strongly to her foster mom and follows her everywhere and is slowly working on getting to know her foster dad. Dixie and her foster brother, an eight year old male GSD have done well together but are still trying to get their pack order squared away.

Dixie is very smart and knows some basic commands; sit, come and go potty. We are working on heel at the present time. Dixie is very strong and pulls fiercely when on a leash. Dixie shows no interest in balls or toys yet.

We have a crate all set up for Dixie, buy have not used it yet. She has had free run of the house and has had no accidents. We were told she may have a problem with submissive/excited urination, but we have not experienced that.

Dixie will need a fairly quiet home with a large fenced yard, and adopter who has considerable GSD experience and the patience she needs to overcome her fears and help build her confidence. She will not be adopted to a home with small children, but older/considerate children who are respectful of her would likely be fine.

Approved adopters may contact her foster at bhriddick@yahoo.com.
