Charlie continues to be Charlie. He is content at our house but still gets upset if he goes anywhere new, or if there is a new situation at a place he’s used to. Whoever comes with him
He loves playing with his Jolly Egg at home and for some reason he likes going out to play
This is a short video of Charlie at Home Depot. He is actually behaving pretty well in it.
Charlie is a 6 year-old black and tan neutered male who came to us when his family moved to Japan. Charlie has the classic look every family wants but he isn't for every family.
He lived with one other dog and a cat. That being said, Charlie does not like other dogs. When we first brought him home he could not tolerate being in the same room as our resident dog. After a number of months he now enjoys playing with the resident dog and a newly added second young resident dog. He will ignore dogs when walking, as long as they don’t run up on him. Playful bouncy Golden Retrievers will set off a round of barking and lunging. Only a strong leader can control this and get him refocused on his walk.
Charlie becomes very anxious if you take him out of the house to another building - Home Depot, PetSmart or other dog friendly venues. He will whine and cry as if he is being beaten. He will settle down after about 20 minutes as long as he has a quiet area (like under a table) to hide. Vet visits, for shots and such can generally be accomplished with firm expectations and owner restraint. More in depth exams require sedation.
Charlie is a great dog in the house. He loves his crate but doesn’t need one - the crate is currently for the young resident dog, but often during the day it’s Charlie’s preferred lounging spot. He has a big bark and is not afraid to use it to warn off postal workers, squirrels, butterflies and the occasional stray dog. He is passionate about his Jolly Egg and will ignore all else to play with it. He loves being petted and scratched but hates being hugged and is not afraid to tell you. He lived with young children in the past but I don’t see any indication that he actually likes them. I think he liked HIS cat from before but I wouldn’t necessarily think that he would like all cats. He likes to play fetch but will rarely drop the ball.
Charlie recently had two growths removed from his face. He is nearly recovered but you can see where his hair hasn’t quite grown back.
Charlie loves going for walks but can be content with a large backyard to run around and play with his Jolly Egg. Once he bonds with you, wherever you are, if he’s there, he’s happy. (Unless it’s Home Depot). He’s a big goofy boy with his family. He’s friendly to guests in our home.
An active house where the dog would be expected to go out to places with the family would not work for this boy. The ideal home for Charlie would be a place where he could just hang out at home and only go out for walks.
